Why Colombia?
This retreat is the manifestation of a decade long dream to bring my students and friends on a healing journey combining yoga, cultural exploration in Colombia. To have quality time in nature and time to just be: both alone and with a group of other heart-centered people. Through my husband who is a native Colombian, this beautiful and incredibly diverse nation has become an adopted home. The people are kind and welcoming, the landscapes are breathtaking, and the flora and fauna are the most diverse on the planet. The Caribbean coast outside of the colonial city of Santa Marta has been our favorite place to visit for over a decade. We go there to enjoy the ocean, swim, snorkel, scuba dive, eat lots of fresh fruit and fish and just take things slow. This place always recharges my batteries, and I know it will do the same for you. You will fly into Santa Marta, and be carried off to a beautiful beachside villa, our base from which we’ll visit different pristine beaches in the region and have cultural encounters with local organizations and artisans.
What will we do there?
The focus of your retreat will be to restore your energy whether you prefer to lie down with a book, take a swim, nap, journal, go for a walk or talk to a friend. There will be a lot of free time each day framed by daily yoga and meditation practices and 3 delicious meals a day. We will encourage you which here to disconnect from the internet completely and practice being present with yourself and deeply absorbing every experience the retreat affords. Cultural experiences such as a cooking class, weaving class or other “artesanías” with local craftspeople will also be arranged. Finally, we plan to take you to the pristine, undeveloped natural coastal reserve of the Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona to enjoy some of the most spectacular beaches in the world.
We will have time to practice yoga twice a day as a group. Mornings will generally be a more vigorous practice including pranayama (breath work) and meditation, and the evening practice will focus on stretching and restoring and preparing for a restful night’s sleep. My goal is over the course of the retreat to teach you simple daily rituals that will soothe your body and mind for as long as you choose to continue practicing it, even after you return home.
The exact itinerary will be provided about one month prior to the trip.
There will also be optional add ons available including private lessons with me, massage, mani/pedi service, boat rides, and even scuba diving or snorkeling excursions.

This retreat will be in the northernmost region of Colombia on the Caribbean coast. You will fly in to the Santa Marta airport and stay at a villa 30-60minutes out of the city. The exact location will depend upon our total guests but will be either on the beach or a short drive from the beach. Two of the nights we will stay in a lodge inside the Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona which is a natural reserve of coastline and the inland jungle along it, unless weather or other unforeseeable circumstances preclude it. In which case we will stay at the villa and visit the beaches in Tayrona by day. Here’s a link to the vicinity on Google maps; zoom out a bit to see the general region.

No. This retreat price covers the cost of all accommodations, meals, yoga instruction, transportation to and from the airport and to the 2 nights stay in the Tayrona Natural Park. Participants are responsible for booking their own flights to arrive in Santa Marta on or before September 13 and leave on or after September 19th. You are welcome to arrive earlier or stay later at your own expense, and we are happy to recommend places to stay or other cities or places of interest to visit in the region if you want to extend your trip.
If you’d like to arrange airfare with another participant, please let us know and we’ll connect you with a travel buddy to coordinate your flight purchase with.
-
We will arrange for a private taxi to pick you up whenever your flight arrives. If other attendees arrive at the same time you may share a taxi. Keep in mind that our official programming will begin at 3pm on Wednesday September 13th and end after breakfast on Tuesday, September 19th when you are booking your flights. We will arrange for a taxi back to the airport at whatever time you need, even if you have to leave prior to the end of programming on the last day.

Our accommodations will include an in house chef for 3 meals a day. We are happy to accommodate your dietary needs. Please indicate them in the registration form required when you sign up and pay for the retreat. We will be eating fresh typical dishes as well as some of Maya’s favorite Ayurvedic meals, but with a Colombian twist. The food of this region of Colombia typically features a lot of sea food, as well as staples common all over the country and South America such as plantains, yucca, potatoes, corn arepas (reminiscent of a tortilla, but much thicker) and a wide variety of fresh fruits. Although we can accommodate vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options, please keep in mind that many of the products available at your home might not be common here, so if there’s something you can’t live without, please bring it with you. If you have more specific dietary or health concerns, please email Maya at hello@mayasiklai.comItem description

It is understandable to have questions about the safety of travel to any foreign country especially one that has suffered a fraught political history. That being said, although the country is still suffering from the economic recession and pandemic fallout of recent years, we are traveling to one of Colombia’s most stable and safe regions. Just like when a visitor comes to your city and you advise them what areas to stick to, we will be carefully choosing (and adjusting if necessary) your itinerary with your safety and comfort always utmost in our minds. You’ll be guided by locals: Maya’s husband who was born and raised in Colombia and visits this region of the country regularly, and trusted service providers we have build long-term relationships with. We will be staying in private residences and secure locations only with security and service providers we have vetted ourselves.
